Dear Canadian Press,
I am writing to express my interest in joining the Canadian Press team.
As an experienced photographer, in sports and other disciplines, I feel I would be a great fit for you and that the Canadian Press would help me continue to evolve as a photographer as well. The chance to join such a well-renowned organization such as yours truly energizes me. To say I am passionate about photography would be a huge understatement.
My obsession with photography was developed almost by accident. I have had a lifelong adoration for magazines and newspapers and had big dreams of following the family tradition of writing. Strangely enough, the thought that somebody was out there capturing all these images that went along with the articles and stories never really occurred to me – until it did.
I have been a journalist, writing for magazines and newspapers since I was fifteen years old. Then, one day, a press accreditation I had applied for came back as a photo pass. Never one to pass up an experience, I borrowed a camera and set off to shoot this event. The results were hideous but the hook was in my skin and my addiction began right there on that day. I have been working with the Modern Free Press since 2017 as a photographer and as a journalist. Prior to that, I worked with the Montreal Times newspaper. I have written for various magazines over the years and captured the photographs that accompanied the articles.
As an avid sports fanatic, I feel that I bring a wealth of knowledge about sports and what to look for when photographing it. My experience as a live performance photographer trained me to not only work in the harshest conditions but to be prepared to capture memorable, split-second moments, and I believe that I bring those skills to the sports world and am able to capture images better as a result.
While studying Commercial Photography at Dawson College, one of my teachers during a speech to the class, suggested that we spend at least twenty minutes a day looking at good photography. I still do that on a daily basis. I have a documentary feel to my work, which comes from my love of documentary film and from time spent taking portraits and wandering about capturing street photography. I am as at ease on a soccer field as I am at a concert, a boxing ring, in a photography studio or down a dark alley somewhere. Please see my enclosed portfolio.
My name is Kieron Yates, and I am looking forward to capturing images for you.
