My first season photographing the Montreal Toundra basketball team, one of two professional basketball teams in the city (I shoot the other one too) has come to an end.
While the playoffs are about to get underway, Montreal won’t be participating and as such, neither will I. That’s how sports go. It has been a great season for me though, and I have had a lot of fun watching the team grow throughout their inaugural season in the BSL (Basketball Super League) – and if I’m honest, it has given me a chance to grow as a sports photographer too. I believe there is always room for improvement no matter how long you’ve been involved in any given discipline – and I am constantly striving to be the best version of myself possible.
Basketball is a lot of fun to photograph, especially at the pro level. Sure – sometimes you have large humans falling on top of you, but that’s all part of the package. Basketball offers an experience quite unlike most other sports, and that is the ability to be in extreme proximity to the players. You’re right there with them, close enough to hear what they say to each other and their conversations with the game officials.
Having two professional ball teams in Montreal means that there is basketball here all year long, which is great on many levels. First, well, there’s basketball year round! And of course, that means that I find myself courtside, capturing these moments quite often.
A lot of these shots can be found on my instagram account or over at the Modern Free Press website. Check ’em out! And remember to like and share with your friends – that not only supports me as a photographer (which I greatly appreciate) but also helps spread the word about the two teams we have. The Montreal Alliance and the Montreal Toundra.
